Today, the Bank of England and the European Central Bank pumped £30 billion (c. billion) into the financial markets after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. Already the day has been marked as ‘Black Monday’.
One of the reasons for instability in the markets is how the banking system has been set up, lending money which the banks do not actually have, the flip side of which is charging interest on static money lent.
Islam: "Oh you who believe, do not engage in usury (interest) doubled or multiplied, but fear God (and deal/ trade fairly), so you may prosper" [Quran 3:140]
Christianity: "You must not make your brother pay interest, whether interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything else that may earn usury." [Deuteronomy 23:19]
"God has permitted trade and forbidden usury." [Quran 2:275]
